When a section that contains activities or resources with availability settings is made 'hidden from students', the availability settings of the child items within the section will be overrides by the parent section availability settings. The current behavior is pretty messy and inconsistent:

When making a section 'Hidden for students':

• All items within the section are automatically updated to 'Hidden for students'.

• Items with 'Available but not shown in course page automatically become 'Hidden for students' (This behavior doesn't make sense as the system allows the user to change the setting to 'Available but not shown in course page' once the section is made 'Hidden for students')

• While the section is hidden, all items within can be updated to 'Available but not shown in course page', but when the section is made visible again, any availability setting that was changed while the section was hidden, will be reversed by their initial availability setting that was set before making the section 'Hidden from students'.

In order to unify the behavior and create a more consisten logic, the proposal is to:

• Items with 'Visible to students' settings will automatically become 'Hidden from students'.

• Items with 'Available but not shown in course page' will remain like this, so teachers are still able to provide a link to the particular activity or resource from other sections.

• Items with 'Hidden from students' will remain like this.

• Any changes to the availability settings of the items within the section made while the section is hidden, will remain once the section become visible. This will affect basically the options 'Available but not shown in course page' and 'Hidden from students', as these are the only choices users can make when the section is hidden.
