In MDL-72834, the link to the calendar was moved into the user dropdown menu; guests do not currently have this menu, which means there is no way to directly navigate to the calendar (unless the site has a calendar block somewhere guests have access to, or provide the URL somewhere).
I'm marking this as a regression rather than an improvement, because this was previously available functionality, when the calendar link was in the drawer (3.11 or older).
As discussed with robert.vangarderen@moodle.com, we should implement this in the top navigation for guest users only, as this allows us to make it available within existing UI elements - there isn't really a way to make the user dropdown available to guests in the same way that an authenticated user accessed the calendar, because for guests the user avatar is replaced by the log in link. Based on the discussion in the comments, we should implement this as follows:
