      1. As a teacher create an assignment
      2. Check "View/grade all submissions" to confirm that the "Status" column reads "No submission" for each student
      3. Check the "Recent activity" block to confirm that no submissions are listed
      4. Log in as a student and view the assignment but do not submit anything
      5. As the teacher again, refresh the list on the "View/grade all submissions" page
      6. The status column in the grading table for each student should still read "No submission"
      7. The "Recent activity" block should still list no submissions
      8. As the student make a submission
      9. As a teacher again, refresh the grading table, which should now read "Submitted for grading" for the appropriate student
      10. The "Recent activity" block should list the submission for the student

When a student views an assignment, even an assignment that is not yet open for submissions, Moodle will indicate to the teacher that that student has made a submission.

      4. As the teacher again, refresh the list on the "View/grade all submissions" page
      5. There should be no change, but the status column now shows "New submission" for the student who viewed the assignment
      6. Still as the teacher go to the course main page and look at the "Recent Activity" block
      7. Unexpectedly, it will claim that the student who viewed the assignment has made a submission

It is probably worth noting that in the "Grading summary" on the main assignment page the number "Submitted" will be correct.
