MOODLE_501_STABLE
From: MDL-84291 discussion.
In a week's format (weekly sections), creating sections until reaching a specific date can be a real pain point for teachers, especially for long courses that last one semester or a full year.
State of the art of weekly sections
There are several aspects related to weeks format:
- The course creator can specify the initial section when creating the course. However, this form field is only present when creating a course and not when editing an existing one. If the initial number is incorrect, weeks should be added/deleted manually.
- Also, there is a special setting in week format to match the course end date with the number of sections. However, there is no way to do the other way around: set a date and create as many weeks as needed.
- When editing the course, weeks can only be added individually, like in the custom sections format. To delete sections, the user can use the bulk editing option. If the teacher needs two more months, you need to click 8 times the add section button.
- There is a system setting to set the maximum number of weeks for course creation. Since
MDL-84291, this setting has been moved to the weeks format plugin settings.
Some considerations
- For teachers, setting the last section date seems more natural for the week format than adding sections one by one. However, the add section button is good for adding a few sections.
- It's important to establish the process for when a user wants to decrease the number of weeks while content exists in the sections to be deleted. The initial proposal will treat this as a batch deletion, utilising the same procedure: first, request confirmation, and if the user agrees, proceed to delete both sections and activities.
