- Log in as an admin and turn on debugging (e.g. if using MDK, mdk run mindev)
- Go to Site administration > Courses > Restore course
- Restore the activity_examples.mbz
backup file. This contains mod_chat and mod_survey instances. - Confirm that you get a debugging message "Invalid component used in plugin/component_callback()" (and other get_string() debugging messages), but you are still able to proceed in restoring the course backup.

Restoring a course < 5.0 with the Chat and Survey activities is canceled.
Message: "Coding error detected, it must be fixed by a programmer: Invalid component used in plugin/component_callback():mod_chat"
Check:
- Create a course under 4.5 with Chat and Survey activities (or use stored mbz)
- Back up the course and download it
- Restore the course under 5.0
Suggestion:
Either skip the two plugins with a note about this or display a note to the user, which they must then confirm.
Open:
What I have not checked is what the situation is with backups before the upgrade, whether these can no longer be restored.
