As reported by rupertrussell in MDL-19907:

I would recommend that you TRIM the short name field when users create new courses.

I spent an hour trying to work out why my csv file was not enrolling students in the unit I wanted. I finally found out that the course had a leading space! in the short name. This should not be possible!
