- Create an assignment as a Teacher.
- Log in as a Student as submit the assignment.
- Remove the submission.
- Page still shows the assignment as having been "submitted for grading" and the student still has the buttons to Edit or Remove the submission.
- Log in as a Teacher and view the assignment.
- The page still shows that there has been 1 submission and the teacher can still view/grade the submissions.
- There is no data (online text/files) for the teacher to grade, but the teacher can still provide a grade for the removed submission.
- (The same process occurs if the submission is deleted by the teacher)
Currently, when a student submits an assignment, they see the information about when the assignment was submitted and that it has been submitted for grading. They can edit the assignment or remove the assignment. Removing the assignment does remove any online text that was entered, and any files associated with the assignment, but the assignment still shows up in the list as having been 'submitted for grading'.
When a teacher logs in after a student has deleted an assignment submission, they still see that a submission has been made, and they can still view/grade that submission, even though there is no longer any data (online text/files) for the teacher to view/grade. The teacher still has the option to remove the submission (assuming they have the appropriate permissions), even though it was already removed by the student.
This is very confusing to both the teacher and the student. Why would a teacher be able to grade a submission that has been removed by the student? Why would a teacher be able to grade a submission that does not have any data to grade?
I think that a student should be able to remove their submission up to the point where a teacher either grades the submission, or locks the submissions. If a submission is removed (by the student) it should not show up any longer on the student or teacher view, and any data associated with that assignment should be removed. If a teacher removes an assignment, there should be a message displayed to the student that their assignment was removed by the teacher, along with an optional message from the teacher. The student should be able to respond to the teachers message for clarification, or accept the teacher's deletion, at which point the submission should no longer show up on either the student or teacher pages.
Perhaps the teacher would still be able to see that a student submitted their assignment, but it is marked as deleted, or shown in a different color and it is no longer able to be graded.
I think that changes similar to these would greatly improve the usability of the assignment activity.
