The workflow as a content creator really isn't obvious. I used the popout to the content bank in a new window and created a new activity but all I could do was close, no option to select that h5p item to use for the h5pactivity I created.

Having to go all the way back and then file picker and then that "Content bank" repository and then select the item you just created... I mean how many clicks does that add, most people will get lost. And repositories are really not something content creators use on a regular basis, it couldn't be more tucked away.

Only figured it out by watching Mary's video walkthrough.

Why is the most prominent workflow assuming you are going to upload an existing h5p file rather than creating something new within Moodle?
