For the Timeline I would prefer the clearer display with the Filter and Sort statuses clearly displayed for the user.

Here are my own screenshots with some comments. At least showing the filtering status in the Timeline more clearly is needed. If the student sets the filter to say Next 7 days, they will forget about the overdue tasks, guaranteed! :
