To replicate:

1. Select an Assignment with some students having submitted for grading
2. Select View all submissions
3. Select sorting order by First name (actually, select any sorting order other than default)
4. Select Grade for assignment for the first submission 
5. Set a grade for that submission, then click Next
6. The selected sorting order is gone, you will not get the next student in the order you selected
