From 1.6 (including the latest stable release as of this date), courses listed under invisible categories are made unavailable to students, even though they are marked as being available. This causes problems, particularly when wishing to create staff-only courses where staff are assigned as students. The solution is to unhide categories, but this becomes quite messy and students are able to see courses that are not relevant to them.
