In addition to the characters in course names this should be tried with items/assignments with HTML characters. For example create assignments such as   Assign Testing 1 & 2 or Assignment < 1 && x > 0   Then assuming you are enrolled on the course submit items to the assignments and they should  appear on the list correctly in the dashboard (see screen shot) Repeat the same for the sort by courses view and the courses tab
