Before testing Create a course and add an assignment activity (set to allow online text submission) Log in as a student, make sure you've enabled web notifications for assignments Go to notification preferences (notification popover > preferences cog thingo) Turn on web notifications for assignments both online and offline Go to the assignment and add a submission You should get an unread notification for submitting the assignment (don't click on it or it'll be marked as read) Go to the student preferences for forums (user menu > preferences > forums) and enable forum tracking and set "do not mark post as read" when sending forum notifications Test Log in as admin and create a forum, set it to force subscriptions Create a discussion and add a post to the discussion Log in as the student and navigate to the forum Confirm that you have an "unread" column and in the discussion row it says there is 1 unread post. The background should be yellow and there should be a space between the number and the tick icon Confirm that when you open the notification popover in the nav bar the unread notification still has a grey background (not yellow) In a new tab go to <your_moodle>/mod/forum/index.php?id=<course_id> (I don't know how to get there through the nav) Confirm that you have an "unread posts" column and the forum activity row it says there is 1 unread post.
