Currently it is hard-coded to bring in docs, sheets, and presentations as a set file type (rtf, xlsx, and pptx). These should be configurable to allow the option to be set system-wide for any file type that makes sense for the google doc type.
All of the options can be found here: https://developers.google.com/drive/web/manage-downloads#downloading_google_documents
Background: This issue came up because the plugin is hard-coded to bring in documents as RTF files...which, ironically, cannot be opened on Chromebooks by default (you need to install another editor and then download the files first). This makes it difficult on teachers who want to allow students to use their Google drives to submit assignments, but who also want to edit these assignments on a Chromebook.
