We're currently in the process of migrating to from Moodle 2.7 to 2.9, which includes migrating from the old "Available for group members only" restrictions to group/grouping availability restrictions.

In some contexts, we use these quite a lot and the current version seems rather a regression in terms of usability, as will become clear in the screenshots (to follow).

For this concrete use case, we have a number of groups in the course, each of which essentially has their own copy of activities. (This is not just the usual "visible groups" mode, but the activities, while having the same title, actually differ in details.) Teachers use availability conditions (previously "group members only" settings) to restrict the activities to groups/groupings. In addition, they use the show/hide button to hide some activities completely from students. It is important form them to know (a) which activity is currently hidden (by show/hide) and (b) which activity belongs to which group/grouping.

In Moodle 2.7, the visibility status (show/hide) was indicated by the activity name being greyed out or not. The group(ing) name was displayed after the activity name.

In Moodle 2.9, activities will always be shown greyed-out to teachers (note that they are not members of the groups, instead they have the capability to access all groups). The group(ing) name will show in a text below the activity, but the text is much longer and more cluttered than before, and will display only when the activity is not hidden by show/hide.

I wonder whether the user interface can be improved at this point.
