We have a number of courses running on a "flipped classroom" model. In other words, students view lectures or other class material outside of class time, and work on problems with help from instructors and TAs during class time. Moodle quizzes are a favorite way to implement and structure the in-class problem solving exercises.

Showing up to class and participating in the group problem solving exercises is an important requirement for students in these classes. Instructors often use IP restrictions as a way to ensure that students show up to do this work in person. However, there are always exceptional situations where a student has job or family requirements that preclude their attending the class in real time. Instructors are asking for the ability to override the IP restrictions for particular students.
