One of the preg_replace calls is missing the unicode modifier. I can only imagine that there is some internal bug in the preg functions when they operate on unicode without that modifier and it depends on the state of some memory buffer whether it works or not.

I would like to see if this patch prevents the random unit test fails in CI.
