If I go to site admin>plugins>install add-on and try to install a plugin from a zip I have to specify the plugin type.

I was installing https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=local_codechecker which is type local (I now know).

Is there no way to figure out the type from the zip? We already have a verification step. Could checking that the relevant directory is writeable be done there?
