Without fix:

1. Select My profile > My badges

2a. If backpack connection is already set, click "Edit settings". This leads to mybackpack.php with a warning at the top of the page.

2b. If backpack is not set up yet, click "Set up connection". On My backpack setting page, enter email address to connect to a backpack. Click "Save". A warning will appear that the top of the page.

With fix, no warnings should appear on the page.
