The file sizes of images distributed with Moodle (eg emoticons, icons, tabs etc.) are not really optimized for size. I took the tab images for example, and resaved them using Adobe ImageReady, and was able to reduce the file size about 90% without any loss of quality. I think it would be a good idea just to save on pageload and bandwidth to run all of the images used in Moodle through ImageReady.
