We had several privacy discussions leading to result that user should be able to define which user profile fields are visible to other students and/or teachers.

Actually user can't fill out optional fields. But they should be able to decide about visibility for mandatory fields or field entries that are imported from external sources. (i.e. city, country, mail, courses)
