We suggest the following options that cover the funcionality most required by our clients:

List of all the categories
List of my categories (categories with a course where Ii'm enrolled)
Combo list
Combo list with my courses (only showing categories with a course where I'm enrolled)

And the possibility to link the user's system role to a frontpage configuration in a matrix:
