1. Course settings > Course format > Hidden sections = Hidden sections are shown in collapsed form.
2. Hide a section.
3. For the hidden section student can only see "Not available" in the section title line.

In the core Topics / Weekly format the student will see BOTH the title of the section / week (whether default or custom) AND the "Not available" note / label, which, I believe should be the expected behaviour here.
