If a site is set to show front page news items, and a user has the forum view set to expandable, the front page display is broken.

To reproduce:

1. Change the front page setting to show news items and a list of courses when users are logged in.
2. Change permissions to allow Authenticated Users to view discussions (so that logged-in users can see the front page news).
3. Log in as any user, edit the profile, and set the forum view to expandable.
4. Navigate to the front page.

Result:
The site news item(s) are not displayed, the list of courses is not displayed, the front page summary is missing, and any blocks from the right column are shown full-width. Also, if logged in as an admin, the turn editing on button is missing.
