Jmol Java applets may have display delays when a page is first loaded, particularly if there are multiple applets embedded in a page.

A commonly used trick (e.g the homepage at http://jmol.sf.net) is to preload and render an image file (typically .jpg). Selecting the image, then loads and renders the interactive applet which has been downloaded in the background.

Also has other advantages. End-users without Java still see something. Can be used to initially display a formula or 2D structure image which is then replaced with with the 3D interactive Jmol applet.

Perhaps a simple system where if an image with the same filename (say, viagra.jpg) as the molecular structure file (say, viagra.mol) is in the same folder it is preloaded.and displayed.

If the image file is not present, the Jmol applet is loaded and displayed as per usual.
